Helping to ensure balance and harmony, our ancestors used Ke Ala o Ka Mahina, or the moon’s phases,as a guide to sustain life and maintain environmental, physical, and spiritual balance. Many still rely on and use traditional Hawaiian knowledge to guide not only fishing and farming activities but the daily activities within their family, personal, and work environments. Various moons were selected to show different moon stages from all three of the anahulu making up the 30-day Hawaiian moon cycle. Each reflects the importance of balance, keen observation, and harmony in Hawaiian life.
